I ...I agree that the power of the group is awesome. I too am a more solitary runner in general but in my first marathon I was suffering from IT Band problems from about mile 19 on. Every time I slowed to walk or stop a bit it hurt even more to start up again so I finally settled into a more tolerable slow pace and kept on going. I was running with a fellow runner from our group the Loma Linda Lopers who was having her own problems of female cramping. We both tried to encourage the other to keep going just another mile. At the beginning of mile 26 I spotted two fellow workers who had come out to cheer me on. They ran onto the course and ran us both in the last mile. Seeing them and having them run with us gave me a new rush of adrenaline and somehow I was able to run that last mile almost as fast as the first, pain and all.
